| CERNELLI
Anthony "Tony" Nicholas Cernelli, 81, a resident of Rio Rancho since
1992, passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2002. Tony was born Nov. 7, 1920,
at Isabella, Pa., the son of Francesco and Assunta Cernelli, who immigrated
to America from Salerno, Italy. After working over 40 years as a chef,
Tony retired and moved to Rio Rancho from Covina, Calif. Tony enjoyed listening
to opera, classical music, reading, gardening and cooking. Tony was a disabled
veteran who served with the U. S. Army in World War II in the India-China-Burma
Theater. Tony is survived by his son, Frank Cernelli, and his wife, Dianne,
and their daughter, Stephanie, of Rio Rancho; and his brother, Alphonso
Genelli; and his sister, Mary Descaro, both of Uniontown, Pa. Interment
will be at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe on Thursday, July 11, 2002,
at 11 a.m. with military honors being presented by the U. S. Army Honor
Guard.
DENERY
Joan Mary Denery, 74, a resident of Rio Rancho since the 1970s and coming
to New Mexico from Long Island, N. Y., passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2002.
Joan was born Feb. 29, 1928, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur S. Ladd
in Brooklyn, N. Y. She graduated from St. Alphonsus Commercial High School
in New York City, N. Y. Joan was married to John J. Denery Sr. on April
16, 1955 at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Center, Long Island, N. Y.
She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Rio Rancho. Joan
was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1994, and one son, Michael.
She is survived by five children: John J. Denery Jr. of Albuquerque, Stephen
W. Denery and wife Keela M. of Belen, Genevieve T. Denery of Albuquerque,
Deborah M. Denery of Rio Rancho, and Lawrence R. Denery of Rio Rancho;
seven grandchildren, JoAnn M. Denery and Kristi Denery of Panama City,
Fla., Amber M. Denery, Ryan M. Denery and Brandon J. Denery of Belen, April
M. Ebert of Albuquerque, and Cheryl L. Ebert of Rio Rancho; and one sister,
Mrs. Martha Helfrich of Nakomis, Fla. The visitation for Joan was Thursday,
June 6, 2002, from 5 to 8 p.m. with the Rosary being recited at 7 p.m.
in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Road at Meadowlark Lane, Rio
Rancho. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 7,
2002, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Rio Rancho.

Rose Marie Diana, 89, a resident of Rio Rancho for over 22 years, passed
away on Tuesday, July 9, 2002. Rose was born Dec. 30, 1912, the daughter
of Celestino and Helena Valdez in Ensenada, N. M. She had been a cook for
the public schools before retiring. Rose was a member of the Auxiliary
for the Felician Convent, a member of the Altar Rosary Society of St. Thomas
Aquinas Catholic Church, the Meadowlark Senior Citizens Center where she
participated with the Meadowlark singers and taught pinochle. Member of
the Italian-American Club. Rose was preceded in death by one son, Steven
Gary Willey, in 1986; one sister, Eliza; and one brother, Celestino. She
is survived by her husband, Jerry Diana of Rio Rancho; children Mary Lou
Nichols of White Lake, Mich., and James Stanley Willey of Duluth, Minn.;
one sister, Adalaide Baca of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren, Brenda and
Michael Dunne, Mark Dunne and wife Sherry, Lisa Sullivan, Kellie Crothers
and husband Shane, Steven Willey and wife Marnie, Randy and Amanda Willey,
and James Willey Jr.; 11 great-grandchildren, and daughter in law Denise
Seaman. The Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2002, in
the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Road at Meadowlark Lane, Rio Rancho.

Julia Eva Halloran, 82, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1974, passed
away on Sunday, July 21, 2002. Julia was born July 5, 1920, the daughter
of Vito and Sophie Gendvilus in Manhattan, N. Y. She was a member of St.
Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, the American Legion, Post 118 - Ladies
Auxiliary, D.A.V., West Mesa #5, and the Elks Lodge, 2500 - Ladies. Julia
was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1975. She is survived by
her daughter, Vivian Halloran of Rio Rancho, N. M.; and one brother, Vito
Gendvilus of Van Etten, N. Y. A graveside service was held in the Cremation

KRONOWIT
Theresa Kronowit, 82, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1971, came to New
Mexico from Whitestone, N. Y. Theresa was born July 11, 1920, the daughter
of Peter and Elizabeth Sekac in Majav, Czechoslovakia. She was a member
of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Theresa was preceded in death by
her husband Frank, daughter Lorraine Deleewerk and son-in-law Peter Deleewerk.
She is survived by one son, Michael Kronowit and wife Lynn; two daughters,
Valerie A. Mathews and Karen Roach and Steve Trujillo, all of Rio Rancho;
four grandchildren, Peter Deleewerk and girlfriend Karen, Jesse Stanchfield,
Kimberly Kronowit and Lorraine Kronowit. A rosary was recited on Tuesday,
July 30, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, with
the Mass of Christian Burial following at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas
Catholic Church. Innichement followed in the Floral Garden Mausoleum at

LUNDBERG
Calvin Eugene "Cal" Lundberg, 73, died on Monday, July 8, 2002, at his
home in Rio Rancho, N.M. He was born in Aberdeen, S. D., to Charles and
Hazel Knight Lundberg, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 20, 1949, Cal
married Elaine DeVries in Minneapolis, Minn. He worked as a police officer
in Edina, Minn., for 18 years and lived in Minneapolis, Minn., before retiring
and moving to Rio Rancho nine years ago. Cal suffered from several illnesses,
including cancer, but remained active in numerous groups and continued
to assist people as he did before retirement. He was active in CASA (Court
Appointed Special Advocate), the New Mexico Long-Term Care State Agency
on Aging Ombudsman Program, and Mediation Services of New Mexico Conflict
Resolution. As an active member of First Baptist Church of Rio Rancho,
he taught adult Bible classes. He was preceded in death by a son, Dan,
who was diagnosed with bone cancer at a young age and endured the removal
of his arm and chemotherapy before he died. When Cal was faced with the
diagnosis of cancer, he remembered how courageous his son had been and
related that Dan had taught him "how to live through cancer, enjoy life,
be happy and most importantly, how to have a sense of humor." He continued
helping other people and stayed positive about the future. Cal is survived
by his loving wife of 53 years, Elaine Lundberg; a son, Charles Lundberg
and wife, Kathy of Roseville, Minn.; a daughter, Jean Mejia and Steve Nelson
of Bailey, Colo.; an "adopted sister," Kate Floria; and two brothers, Harold
Lundberg and wife, Maryann, of North Easton, Mass., and Ralph Lundberg
and wife, Mary, of San Diego, Calif. Also surviving are six gorgeous grandchildren,
Danny, Charlie, Emily and Ashley Lundberg, Briana Mejia and Dan Nelson;
and numerous aunts, uncles and a host of loving friends. Memorial services
are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002, at First Baptist Church
of Rio Rancho, 3906 19th Ave., with Pastor Si Budagher officiating. Honorary

MALMQUIST
Alice H. Malmquist, a resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on July 21,
2002. She was born on Aug. 2, 1925, in Brooklyn, N. Y., to Sverre and Helga
Nilsen. Alice was a very special woman, devoting most of her lifetime to
volunteering for many organizations, particularly the Girl Scouts. She
loved gardening and enjoyed taking care of her roses, was active in the
ceramics club at Meadowlark Senior Center, and was a member of Calvary
Lutheran Church in Rio Rancho. Alice will be dearly missed by all who knew
and loved her. She is survived by her husband, Al of Rio Rancho; daughter
Carol and husband Dan Grant of Rio Rancho; son Roger Malmquist and his
wife Rita of Butte, Mont.; sisters Thelma Anderson of Westwood, N. J.,
and Ruth and husband the Rev. Stanley Dokken of Sun City, Ariz.; grandchildren
Adam and Carson Grant and Eric Malmquist. A memorial service for Alice
will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Calvary Lutheran

McFARLING
Loving Father - Morris Edward McFarling, 73, passed away Sunday, June
30, 2002, in T or C, N. M. He was a resident of the New Mexico Veterans
Center. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 28 years, Maxine
Luella McFarling. He is survived by his daughter, Nicole McFarling Hudson
and son-in-law V. Timothy Hudson. He was born in Monticello, Ark., on Feb.
20, 1929. He was an Army veteran, serving in the Korean War in the 1950s
and honorable discharged of duties in 1956. "Mac," as he was always known
by his friends, lived in San Diego, Calif., from 1952 until 1985 when he
retired as a machinist from Rohr Industries. He moved to New Mexico in
1995 with his daughter and son-in-law. At his request, he will be cremated
by Sunrise Society of New Mexico and his remains to be interred in the
Memorial Rose Gardens at Vista Verde Cemetery in Rio Rancho, N. M.
SHAPIRO
Betsy E. Shapiro, 62, a resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on July
6, 2002. Betsy was born on July 15, 1939, in Buffalo, N. Y., to Harry and
Esther Hymowitz. Betsy was a very loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She was a member of Congregation Albert Synagogue. Betsy was very active
in politics and a proud member of the Democratic Club. She adored her family
and her precious grandchildren and will be dearly missed by all who knew
and loved her. Betsy is survived by her husband, Earl Shapiro, of Rio Rancho;
her sons, Philip Shapiro and wife Connie of Rio Rancho, Michael Shapiro
and fiancée Debbie, and Daniel Shapiro, all of Albuquerque; sister
Barbara and husband Lou Montaño of Aurora, Colo.; brother Raymond

STEWART
Lee D. Stewart, 72, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1995, passed away
on Monday, June 10, 2002. Lee was born March 11, 1930, the son of Sam and
Winnie Bell Steward in Junction City, Arkansas. After retiring from Chrysler
Corp., Lee and his wife moved to Rio Rancho from Oak Park, Mich. Lee served
in the Korean War and retired from the National Guard in 1990. He was also
a member of the Knights of Columbus and United Auto Workers, Local 51,
of Detroit. He was devoted to his church, family and friends. Lee loved
his garden, lawn and flowers. He also enjoyed jazz music. Les is survived
by his wife of nearly 50 years, Delores of Rio Rancho; two daughters, Trish
Stewart of Playa Del Rey, Calif., and Beverly Des Chenes and husband Frederick
of Placitas, N. M., and their children, Taylor and Tessa; two sisters,
Gladys Buffington and Alice Martin; and niece Winifred Tubbs, all of Arkansas.

THORSON
Irene Emily Thorson, 93, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1983, passed
away on Friday, July 12, 2002. Irene was born Dec. 4, 1908, the daughter
of William J. and Rose Steiner Thuesen in Beloit, Wisc. She graduated from
Whitewater State Teachers College in Whitewater, Wisc. She had been a high
school mathematics teacher and taught at Roosevelt Junior High in Beloit,
Wisc., until her marriage to C. M. (Pete) Thorson. Before retirement she
worked at Electral Specialties in South Beloit as a secretary. Irene was
a member of the Wisconsin Hand Weavers, member of St. Paul's United Church
of Christ in Rio Rancho, was very active in the Meadowlark Senior Center,
and she enjoyed gardening and weaving was her passion. Irene was a loving
and devoted mother. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. M. Thorson,
in 1967. Irene is survived by two daughters, JoAnn Wittkowske of Rio Rancho,
and Elaine Frary and husband Bart of Hartford Ala.; six grandchildren,
five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. It has been suggested
that contributions be made in Irene's memory to the Meadowlark Senior Center,

Juanita Alma Marple Uthe, 86, died May 20, 2002, in Denver, Colo. Wife
of Curtis L. Uthe (deceased). Survived by Evelyn L. Uthe, daughter, Denver,
Colo.; James R. Weiss, nephew, Cleveland, Ohio; Gloria Breidenbach, niece,
Baytown, Texas; one great-niece, four great-nephews and two great-great-nieces.

N. M., June 29, 2002, at 2 p.m.
WHITAKER
William B. "Benny" Whitaker, a resident of Rio Rancho, passed away at
home on July 5, 2002. Benny was born on Jan. 5, 1915, to George W. and
Esther Cozart Whitaker in Battleboro, N. C. He was a long time resident
of New York prior to coming to Rio Rancho in 1976. Benny was proud to have
served his country in the United States Army during World War II and earned
several medals, including the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service
Medal, Medal of Good Conduct and the WWII Victory Medal. He retired from
the Army Reserve after over 30 years of faithful service in 1974 as Sergeant
First Class. He went on to retire from the New York Sanitation Department.
He was very fond of and enjoyed working on automobiles and was an excellent
mechanic. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 118. Benny was
a very devoted husband and father and will be dearly missed by all of his
family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Mary,
of Rio Rancho; his daughter, Patty, and husband John of Los Lunas; sisters
Bessie, Frances, Edith, Ethel and Marie; brother Alvin; many nieces, nephews
and a host of very special friends. Graveside services for Benny were held
on Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery with

BLAIR
Barbara Frye Blair, 81, of Rio Rancho, NM, passed away on Sept. 16,
2002. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, David Dayton
Blair. She is survived by her children: Genie and Mike Ryan, Ruth Ann Blair,
all of Rio Rancho; Casey and Cathy Blair of Chelsea, MI; and three grandchildren,
David Blair, Christopher Ryan and Sarah Blair. Mrs. Blair was born June
27, 1921, in Ponca City, Okla., grew up in Texas, attended Texas Tech University,
and spent most of her adult life in Oklahoma and Kansas. She was co-owner
of Blair Tax Service in Tulsa, OK. A memorial service will be held at Rio
Rancho Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. Donations

CAVILEER
Curtis Monroe Cavileer, a retired executive of several Beatrice Foods
Company subsidiaries, died Friday, Sept. 20, at St. Vincent Hospital in
Santa Fe, N. M., following injuries sustained in a fall. He was 84. Mr.
Cavileer was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and later moved to Akron, Ohio,
where he received his early education at Goodyear Industrial University.
Additionally, he was a veteran of the United States Army, including assignments
in Intelligence at home and in Okinawa. Throughout his career, Mr. Cavileer
was active in industry and civic affairs, holding the offices of president
of the area Chamber, American Legion and Rotary; chairman of the United
Fund, board member of the NC Economic Commission and 32nd degree Mason
and member of the Masonic Graotto. Mr. Cavileer also tried his hand at
acting, playing a romantic role in the movie "It Happened in Akron," which
featured renowned actor Jess White. Mr. Cavileer was a spiritual person.
He was a church elder, a Sunday school teacher and a past president of
the Christian Men's Fellowship. His many industry and civic achievements
have been recognized in several editions of the Who's Who in the West and
in the East. After retiring from Beatrice Foods, Mr. Cavileer and his wife
Justina switched gears and moved near Albuquerque to be near their children
and play an active role in the lives of their grandchildren. In addition
to his wife Justina, he is survived by daughter Mikele Jennings, and son-in-law
former Rio Rancho Mayor John Jennings; son David Cavileer, vice president
and general manager of WXVT Television of Greenville, Miss., and wife Eleanor;
six grandchildren: Dawn Holmes and Brett Giarratano of Scottsdale, Ariz.,
Erin Cavileer of Greenville, Miss., Jessica Jennings and Michael Malson
of Berlin, Germany; and one honorary grandchild, Cassandra Ianni of Solon,
Ohio; and six great-grandchildren. A daughter, Carol Lynn Malson, and grandson,
David Christopher Malson, preceded Mr. Cavileer in death. If Mr. Cavileer's
character could be summed up in one word, it would be the word "giving."
He was big-hearted, generous in nature, freely giving of himself to his
family, his job, his community and his country.
GARDNER
Maria R. Gardner, 76, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1989, passed away
on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002. Maria was born July 5, 1926, the daughter of
Enrique and Carolina Naranjo Romero in Ordway, Colo. She came to New Mexico
from Maywood, Calif. Maria was very talented in arts and crafts, a prize
winning quilter, a doll maker and collector, and a professional seamstress.
She was a member of the Gospel Light Baptist Church. Maria was a loving
mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Leon S. Gardner in 1992. She is survived by her daughter,
Gloria C. Madrid and husband, Chris; one sister, Emily Martinez of Rio
Rancho; two brothers, Fred and Henry Romero, both of Raton, N. M.; grandchildren
Gina Munoz, Chris Anthony Madrid and Aaron Madrid; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at 2 p.m.

GROSS
Eileen Janie Gross passed away unexpectedly Aug. 31, 2002. She was 72.
She was born in Pageton, W. Va., to Arthur Gilbert Rose and Mary Elizabeth
Mitchem Rose on Aug. 16, 1930. Ms. Gross was loved, and will be missed
by her family and many, many friends. She has lived in San Rafael since
1958 with her husband, Floyd "Junior " Gross, who passed away in 1984.
She has been a member of the Grants Church of Christ. She enjoyed working
at Bluewater Elementary School's cafeteria, and she loved to travel and
is now on the journey of her life. Ms. Gross is survived by one son, Wayne
Gross and his wife, Laura, of Rio Rancho; one daughter, Dianna Woodard
and her husband, Jim, of Roswell; six grandchildren, Jameson Woodard, Stacy
Sneed and her husband, Coy, Tracy Metcalf and her husband, John, Michele
Wood and her husband, Eric, Jenny Gross, and Patrick Gross; seven great-grandchildren,
Kristen Woodard, Bethany Sneed, Lane Sneed, Victoria Woodard, Kayla-Summer
Gross, Alex Wood, and Jayedon Wood. A visitation was held Tuesday 4 to
7 p.m. at Grants Mortuary Chapel. A funeral service was held Wednesday
at 10 a.m. at the Grants Church of Christ with Joy Lea Brazell and Matthew
Killough officiating. Burial followed at Grants Memorial Park. Pallbearers

Gladys. M Scribner, 93, a resident of Albuquerque since 1968, died Friday,
Sept. 20, 2002. She is survived by her brother, Walter Scribner, and wife,
Helene of Albuquerque; niece Jacqueline Morice and husband, William of
Indianapolis, Ind; nephews Philip Scribner and wife, Barbara of Ft. Myers,
Fla., and David Scribner and wife, Sandra of Corrales; three great-nieces;
three great-nephews; two great-great-nephews; and one great-great-niece.
Ms. Scribner was a member of Eastern Star and Past Worthy Matron of Courtlandt
Chapter #532, Peekskill, N. Y. She was presently affiliated with Turquoise

Methodist Church. She retired in 1969 after 17 years with the New York
Department of Corrections. Service was held Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at
10 a.m. at French Mortuary-Westside Chapel with Rev. David Snyman, officiating.
Interment will take place at Ballston Spa Cemetery, Ballston Spa, NY. Friends
visited French Mortuary-Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course, NW (three blocks
north of Paseo Del Norte) Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, from 6 until 7:30 p.m.
SIEVERT
Clifford A. Sievert was born in Richmond Hills, N.Y. and raised in Wisconsin.
He was a resident of New Mexico for 40 years, including 18 years in Rio
Rancho. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean; daughter Linda Stebbins
and son-in-law Jack Stebbins of Los Ranchos. Cliff was a 50-year member
of the James B. Hayes Blue Lodge in the Valley of Milwaukee, the Ballut
Abyad Shrine, and is a 32 degree Mason. A political activist for many years,
Cliff had a strong sense of personal and political right and wrong. He
will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A memorial service will
be held Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Faith Evangelical Free Church,
900 Southern Blvd. SE. Memorial contributions in Cliff's name may be made
directly to the church. |
